VisionTV's Lord Have Mercy! and Carry Me Home Receive Gemini nominations
Release Date: September 12, 2003
The groundbreaking series Lord Have Mercy!, VisionTV's first foray into
situation comedy, has received two nominations for the 18th Annual Gemini
Awards. In addition, a nomination went to the documentary Carry Me Home: The Story & Music of the Nathaniel Dett Chorale, which was also produced in association with the network. The winners will be announced at the awards gala on Oct. 20. Lord Have Mercy! is nominated in the category of Best Comedy Program or Series. Co-star Leonie Forbes, meanwhile, has been nominated for Best Individual Performance in a Comedy Program or Series.
The series, which premiered on VisionTV during Black History Month in
February, chronicles the eccentric goings-on at a storefront church in the
heart of Toronto's Caribbean community. It was created by filmmaker
Frances-Anne Solomon, founder of production company Leda Serene Films, and
writer/producer Vanz Chapman. Says Chris Johnson, VisionTV's
Senior Vice President, Programming: 'Lord Have Mercy! exemplifies the
revitalization of our schedule over the past year. The series was a bold
departure for the network, and we're delighted to see it get the recognition
it deserves.' Carry Me Home, an hour-long film from producer and director Liam Romalis, has captured a nomination in the category of Best Performance in a Performing Arts Program or Series. The documentary profiles an acclaimed Toronto choral ensemble that celebrates the legacy of Nathaniel Dett, a Canadian-born composer and conductor who profoundly influenced the evolution of black music in North America. It also aired on VisionTV last February.
Says Johnson: 'Carry Me Home is a heartfelt celebration of musical artistry.
We're proud to have given Liam Romalis's wonderful film its world television
premiere.' Last month, four documentary programs produced in
association with VisionTV earned nominations for Gemini Documentary, News and
Sports Awards. These are: Cecil's Journey, Undying Love, A Child's Century of
War and The Sacred Balance. VisionTV proudly celebrates 15 years
as Canada's multi-faith television network.
